CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Captain John "Black Jack" Geary
SERIES: The Lost Fleet
CANON POINT: After the ending of the book "Relentless."
LOSS: Loss of all memory pertaining to the relationship he has with Co-President Victoria Rione in a romantic sense.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: It's the near future, and humanity has spread across the stars. There are currently two factions; the democratic Alliance and the fascist Syndicate Worlds. For the past century, the Alliance and the Syndicate Worlds have been at war, with no reprieve for either side.

The Alliance has been holding together to one hope; that the legendary hero, Black Jack Geary, who went missing in a battle at the beginning of the war, would be sent by the living stars to ensure the Alliance's victory.

The Alliance Fleet is currently deep in the Syndic Home System, facing insurmountable odds. Its then that the leaders of the Alliance Fleet recover a stasis pod. A stasis pod containing one Captain John "Black Jack" Geary.

Awoken from a hundred years in survival sleep, Captain Geary is thrust into the task of ensuring that the Alliance Fleet gets home, if not, to at least ensure that the fleet flagship Dauntless, which carries the key for the Alliance's victory, back to Alliance space.

Captain John Geary is not one to live up to the propaganda with which the Alliance government's propaganda has him painted with. He despises the heroic figure of "Black Jack" Geary he's supposed to live up to.

Geary's history of how he became this legendary morale figure was at the battle of Grendel. He had the command of his own heavy cruiser, the Merlon, and defeated the Syndics in a miraculous bout of stratergy and cunning. John, however, lost his ship in the process, forcing the crew out before eventually joining them.

His escape pod was damaged when it launched, so it didn't launch a homing beacon for the Alliance to rescue when backup arrived, and it drifted for about a hundred years, until it was finally picked up.

Geary awoke on-board the Dauntless as they were arriving in the Syndic Home Star System, on their attempt to decisively end the war. Geary was appointed Fleet Commander by Admiral Bloch, because he was the most senior captain in the fleet.

Geary was promoted to Captain honourably when he was presumed dead at Grendel, so his seniority spanned about a hundred years.

John, himself, is calm, collected and quiet. He comes from a time of peace, when the Alliance Navy was less "win at all costs" and focused more on tactics and minimising losses. This is a huge contrast from the current tactics of honourable death in battle.

John prefers the company of himself and his thoughts, more often than not, but he is far than anti-social. He has had romantic engagements with people since leaving survival sleep, none have amounted to much, due to political reasons.

Since being woken from survival sleep, and thrown into command of the entire Alliance Fleet, John has, rather stubbornly, brought back some changes in the attitudes of the Fleet Officers.

One of the first things he introduced back was the art of saluting a higher-ranked officer. This had all but fallen off the radar in the war, as it was seen as unneccessary in perpetual war-time.

Later, when he discovered that it was perfectly acceptible for Alliance sailors to execute Syndicate Worlds' POWs without trial, he, angrilly, insisted that it was against the morals and foundations of the Alliance, and their Ancestors, and no Alliance officer would execute prisoners in a fleet under his command.

John is generally calm, kind and honourable. He doesn't like to stand out, and would generally prefer to just continue doing his job without interruptions.

The image of Black Jack Geary is something of a frustration to John. Used to being in the background of everything, he now finds himself thrust into the limelight. John tries his best to downplay everything, not wanting the inherent fame that has been given to him.

John has a strong sense of honour. His feelings for Captain Tanya Desjani are evidence of this. Due to Captain Desjani being under his command, he can't lawfully, or honourably, have an open relationship with her. Despite his feelings for her being strong, his sense of honour, and not wanting to taint Desjani's honour, keep those feelings solely in check.

Geary feels pretty passionate about the values of the Alliance. He despairs at the fact that it seems to have degenerated into the opposite of what it was before he went into stasis. He finds out that the Alliance habitually executes prisoners and bombards civilian targets. He, immediately, stops all of this behaviour, reminding the fleet of the reasons the Alliance was created.

John shows some considerable restraint of his anger. Because of the incident resulting in Geary rising to Fleet Commander, he received a lot of opposition, from blatant opposition in Fleet Conferences, to subterfuge, and even destruction of Alliance ships.

On the opposite spectrum, he also needs to fight the people who are in hero worship of him. John understands that his status as a hero of the Alliance is one of great power, and he has no interest in using that power. It takes all of his cunning, and his friends' help

He's not afraid to ask for assistance, often asking Captains Desjani, Duellos, and Tulev, and Co-President Rione, for tactical and political advice.

All in all, John is a born commander. He is able to see the bigger picture in battle, but is often clueless in matters of relationships and friendships. This is mostly due to the fact that he has awoken from a century adrift to a massive burden.

ABILITIES: [ If applicable, provide a summary of your character's supernatural, magical or technological abilities, or anything that might make them otherwise exceptional compared to your average human being. Links are welcome if the character has too many abilities to expand on here.]

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: John is walking, getting his bearings, looking around. A castle? Considering he was just wandering around the corridors of the Dauntless a few moments ago, this is all a bit jarring. Where the hell was he? There were no comm panels on the walls, he didn't have his personal comm unit with him... Could this be some sort of Syndic trick? Or those aliens? Since they were back in Varandal, he was suspecting the aliens more than the Syndics. Maybe a crazy, whacked out dream. The past few months of fleeing through enemy space catching up to him, or a delayed reaction to the survival sleep. Either way, he was going to get the Fleet Physician to give him a check-up when he got back. If he got back...

He had to admit, this place seems a bit peaceful, the few people he's passed look normal, even though their clothing styles and mannerisms aren't what he's used to. Maybe now with the Fleet back in Alliance space, this was his brain telling him he needed to retire. If it was, it was a crazy way of doing it. Everything does seem real. He continues down the hallways warily, as if expecting something to jump out and confirm his suspicions, maybe trying to kill him.

That wouldn't be surprising. From what he heard off the interrogation of CEO Boyens, the aliens could hide themselves damned well. Maybe they were around now, watching him, studying him... Geary shakes his head, trying to dislodge those thoughts. Overthinking a situation with little information is just as bad as not thinking at all.

"I need more information. And the best way is to ask."

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: [There's the clearing of a throat, before a new voice filters out through the journals.]

My name is Captain John Geary, Commander of the Alliance Fleet. I... I don't know how I got here, or why, but I would like to find out. [If just to confirm or deny his own paranoia].

Also, if Captain Tanya Desjani of the Dauntless or Co-President Victoria Rione of the Callas Republic are here, as well as any officer, sailor or marine of the Alliance fleet, please contact me. [Hell, he'd settle for a Syndic CEO at this point.]

To the honour of our Ancestors, Geary out.

INTENT: None at the moment!
